The first pour of the Moscow Mule dates back to the 1940's, when copper beer mugs were common, and when vodka was still an up-and-coming drink in the United States. "White Whiskey. No Taste. No Smell,” was how Smirnoff branded it.
Bartenders began substituting vodka for other hard liquor in cocktails for clients who didn’t like the taste of alcohol. One such drink was the Mamie Taylor, which consisted of Scotch whisky, lime juice, and ginger beer. By swapping vodka for Scotch, the Moscow Mule was born. The name was a play on vodka’s Russian origins. But the cocktail is an American original. That’s why we call it the American Mule.
